This seems to be becoming a local tradition - last repatriation flight out does a flyby to say “thanks for looking after our people”. That’s Lufthansa at Christchurch and Auckland, and now L’Armee de l’Aire Francaise.

Perhaps not the wisest move to make your passengers seasick at the start of a 12hr flight with some enthusiastic wing waggles and a steep climb out, but that’s what they  get for flying military.

Sorry, you have to click through the newspaper article to get the video - couldn’t find a direct link.

We had a pair of C17 do a low flyover today as part of the salute to first line medical workers. We are just a few blocks from the hospital that had the first initially known US death so they gave us a good show. First was higher and a bit south but the second was right down on the deck and directly above the house - rattled all the windows and it was pretty awesome.

That was cool. And now, your fun A400M fact: The starboard engines turn opposite the port engines, but all four engines turn in the same direction to allow for maximum parts commonality. One side has the propeller reversed with gearing (I don’t remember which).

Not quite, unless you meant the starboard engi nes on each wing turn opposite the port engines on each wing , the engines one and three rotate anti clockwise, and engines two and four rotate clockwise (as you look at the aircraft)

I think it’s quite an genius idea to have two engines counter rotating the other two.

If I recall an RAF pilot says it takes pressure off the a irframe and pilots find it easier to fly.

No....... just clarifying.

I appreciate that, and while I know a lot, I by no means know it all. I usually take a minute or two to make sure I’m correct. This time, I shot from the hip and missed.

We had a conversation about that one a couple of years ago - pretty much the same conversation you just had with Svend, in fact .

Maybe they could have used the contra rotating way for using the turbo props. All engines and all of their parts could be identical. They are efficient too but a bit noisy. The examples in the picture are actually propfans.

C17s can fuckin MOVE when the throttles get handled appropriately. Rode one out of Iraq in 08, gnarliest takeoff I've been on.
